Chapter 38.1 - His anger

Because of Lou Qingwu’s efforts today, the emperor imperially bestowed a lot of objects to her.

By the time she had left the palace, it was already well into the night.

She stepped on a ground full of silver frost, slowly making her way to outside of the palace.

Lou Qufeng had already begun to leave first but he probably already knew what had happened in the inner palace tonight, he was always a step ahead.

For the first time ever, he had let an old servant who always served by his side, Old Housekeeper Uncle Zhao, actually wait outside of the Vermillion Bird gate for her.

When he saw her, Uncle Zhao rushed over to her side.

His wrinkled face was like a chrysanthemum, “Aiyo, eldest miss, you’ve finally come out. Laoye’s been talking about you for a long time. Come, come, let’s hurry back to the residence. Laoye’s back there waiting for you.”

Lou Qingwu didn’t say anything and acted as if she didn’t notice how obviously he was trying to flatter her.

She bent at the waist to step into the carriage but from the corner of her eye, she saw a figure to the side.

Her feet stopped but only for a moment, before she quickly went back to normal.

After she had sat in the carriage for the while, Lou Qingwu then lifted up the carriage’s curtain, looking at the man who was walking away from the palace.

His dark red court robes and jade-like beautiful face shone in the moonlight, bringing a sense of warmness.

His face always held a smile but he wasn’t as warm or well-natured as his smiling face would suggest.

So he had another nickname, “the Smiling Tiger”.

Mu Yunqing.

Lou Qingwu muttered under her breath as her lips shaped his name, curling up into a cold smile.

Mu Yunqing, top scholar of Yonghe 8th year, was currently 28 years old.

He was a fifth ranked justice department young official and had another identity, the left prime minister Li Miao’s dream son-in-law, eldest miss Li Xiangluan’s fiance.

According to the rumours, 6 years ago, when Mu Yunqing was still in school, his “Clear song for the moon on reed” became famous throughout the capital, which also won the heart of Li Xiangluan.

It was only a pity that Mu Yunqing rejected her offer for marriage at the time.

But a short while later, for some unknown reason, he would carry a bramble and ask for punishment three times, begging for her hand in marriage.

It was the capital’s shocking news for the year.

Afterwards, Li Xiangluan would lower herself to marry him and they would treat each other respectfully in marriage.

They were the envy of everyone.

It was also a pity that Mu Yunqing clearly had lots of opportunities to rise through the ranks in these six years, but instead, willing suffered to remain in the justice department.

And these years, as Li Miao’s excellent son-in-law, Mu Yunqing had helped Li Miao do a lot of things, including the massacre of the Tang family.

If she wanted to re-open the case from all those years ago, she would first have to gain the case file from then.

To do this, she’d have to first strike from Mu Yunqing.

Her eyes flashed a dark light as Lou Qingwu slowly lowered the curtain and allowed Mu Yunqing’s long silhouette to disappear from her eyes.

Mu Yunqing … how would she find his weakness?

The swift horse carriage galloped through the dark streets as the clatter of the horse hooves were exceptionally clear on the limstone paths.

But in a dark spot, the horse carriage suddenly halted to a stop.

Lou Qingwu’s brow furrowed as she calmly asked, “Uncle Zhao, what happened?”

But no one outside of the horse carriage answered her.

She could only hear a strange sound, like something slicing through the air.

Whooshing sounds were heard as Lou Qingwu’s face darkened.

She instinctively bent down, lowering herself as she narrowly dodged an arrow in her direction.

A dense rain of arrows showered behind Lou Qingwu and onto the door of the horse carriage, producing a low humming sound.

Before more sharp arrows rained down, she furrowed her brows and opened the curtain to step out.

There, she saw Uncle Zhao passed out on the ground, bent oddly.

And on the roofs in all directions were people dressed in black, lying down.

When they saw her appear, they immediately jumped up and jumped down to surround her.

Her eyes were dark as she looked at the clearly aggressive people in black.

“Who was it that sent you to assassinate me?”

“You want to know? Ask King Yama!” Their leader laughed coldly as the sharp blade in his hand had already moved to stab Lou Qingwu in an instant.

TL note

Uncle Zhao - the ‘uncle’ part is just a respectful term because he’s old. He’s not literally her uncle and calling him “Mr Zhao’ would seem too respectful, he’s a servant after all. So calling him uncle shows a certain degree of respect for how old he is, but not formal because he’s not of a higher rank than Qingwu.
