She looked and then suddenly covered her face and began sobbing loudly. 

The whole shop was a bit quiet so her cries were even obvious. 

Seeing her cry so pitifully, some noble wives couldn’t help but ask, “What’s wrong?” 

Ruan Zhen looked at one of the women as her tears kept rolling down her face, “Madam Liu, don’t you recognise me?” 

“You …” Madam Liu looked at Ruan Zhen a couple of times. 

Today, Ruan Zhen was dressed completely differently compared to how the left prime minister’s wife normally dressed, especially not how a noblewoman would dress. 

She didn’t have any adornments in her hair and her clothes were plain. 

So Madam Liu really didn’t recognise her in the beginning but after a few more looks, she recognised her, shocked, she said, “You … you’re the left prime minister’s second wife?” 

Ruan Zhen wiped at her eyes, “Not any more.” 

When Madam Liu opened her mouth, didn’t know what to say. 

Ruan Zhen’s business had pretty much spread throughout the whole capital and the other noblewomen pretty much looked down on her. 

But right now, she was too pitiful so she couldn’t help but ask, “Why are you suddenly crying?” 

Ruan Zhen was waiting for her to ask exactly that. 

Once she heard her question, she started to cry even harder. “When I saw Qingwu’s wedding set, I thought of my pitiful daughter. When she was married, Laoye said that there was no money for her so she didn’t even have a proper dowry. She just got married with scraps and as her mother, I just couldn’t bear it … wu wu wu…” 

As she continued to speak, she started to cry again. 

After all, she wasn’t part of the Lou family any more so for the sake of meeting her objective, she really didn’t care about darkening Lou Qufeng’s name any more. 

Once Madam Liu heard this, as a mother to a daughter herself, she couldn’t bear it either. 

But once she thought about it, something felt off. 

There was no money to marry off the concubine born daughter but when the legitimate daughter was getting married, there’d be enough money to buy a wedding set from Jinsi building? 

Just the pearls on the wedding set would be an enormous sum. 

Instantly, the eyes on Lou Qingwu became hostile. 

Was the gossip wrong? 

Lou Qingwu heard Ruan Zhen but didn’t speak, even after she finished. 

Once she started to get strange looks from the other noblewomen, she still didn’t speak. 

Madam Liu saw that she didn’t refute it and thought she felt guilty, so she couldn’t help but speak up for her, “Lou family’s eldest daughter, can you explain why when the concubine daughter is married off, there’s no money, but now you have money? Were you secretly bullying your own sister?” 

Once Madam Liu spoke, instantly all the other noblewomen understood. 

But they were a bit smarter, after all, this was a royally appointed countess by the emperor himself. 

Even if she was bullying her concubine born sister, that daughter is now married so who cares? 

Facing Madam Liu’s question, Lan Bai who stood by Lou Qingwu, first got mad but was stopped by Lou Qingwu. 

She carelessly set down her tea cup with a soft knock on the table. 

Lou Qingwu looked up, straight at Madam Liu, “This noble wife, first don’t get too anxious and question me. First, why don’t you ask this former left prime minister’s second wife, who exactly managed the Lou family’s residence?” 

That Madam Liu was someone who didn’t have much of a backbone and her opinions swayed with whatever was popular. 

That’s why she was so easily used by Ruan Zhen. 

When she heard Lou Qingwu, she instantly turned to Ruan Zhen.  

Ruan Zhen’s heart thumped, she didn’t think Luo Qingwu would instantly shoot her down. 

“This …” Her eyes turned around as she tried to think of a response. 

Lou Qingwu lightly laughed, slowly wiping away lint that wasn’t visible on her sleeve, “If I’m remembering correctly, these past ten years, this former second wife, you’ve been managing the household. And I have only been back in the capital for less than three months. So, if you, as the head of the household, don’t know where the money’s gone, what’s the meaning of asking me? If we really want to get even, I actually want to ask this former second wife, when you managed the household, where exactly did you hide all that money?”
