Chapter 6.1 - Flirting





Lou Qingwu could still remember that night’s unfortunate events. The whole family banquet became a mess, Li Jingsheng had been bitten by the snake and nearly killed her for it, being viciously yelled at by her father, being pushed into water, eventually leading her to have a fever … up until the Li family’s fiancee was changed to Lou Lianxin.

“... distant small town?” Why would she be there?

But then again, that girl deserved it. That year, she had nearly killed him so for him to not kill her was already good enough. Humph, maybe he was thinking too much. Such a gentle and weak girl wouldn’t be able to cause any big waves. It was just that his personality was naturally suspicious so investigating a bit too much wasn’t wrong.

His subordinate saw that his facial expression was better, then he worriedly asked, “... Second gentleman, your maternal grandfather said that as you’ve already come, they want to give you a welcoming banquet tonight.”

“I’m not going. Tell him that this general is tired from travelling and needs to rest. Also for them to not disturb this general in the next few days.”

“Yes …” The subordinate laughed bitterly. Tired from travelling? Second gentleman, it’s only a six hour trip from the capital city to here, would your grandfather believe it?

“Also, in a while, tell third gentleman to calm down for a few days. Don’t let him muck around any more. In a few days, he’ll follow this general back to the city.”

“Ah?” The subordinate stared blankly for a moment, “Laoye’s letting third gentleman back to the residence?”

“En.” Li Jingsheng replied with a sound. He waved his hands to tell his subordinate to leave. It’s already been three years so that business has already settled down. It’s not like Ziqing could stay here forever, furthermore, grandmother was starting to miss him too.

** laoye - in this case, it's referring to Lou Jingsheng and Li Ziqing’s dad, the left prime minister - also formal/polite way of addressing an older noble man

** first daughter, second daughter = first (嫡) refers to the children of the first wife whoa are seen as more legitimate descendants, second (庶) would be concubine born children, seen as second class because concubines were pretty much servant classed unless the husband really liked that concubine.

This is a pretty big deal because the children of the first wife are seen as legitimate and better, and if the husband is upright, he should respect and honour his first wife more by treating their children better. However, and in the case of many other Chinese novels, the husbands prefer their concubines and the concubine born children.

**gentleman = e.g second gentleman = 二公子 = polite way of addressing a young noble male

*this general - pretty awkward phrasing in English but it's Li Jingsheng referring to himself as a general when he's speaking to others, reminding others of his official post and how much better he is than everyone. Same with "your subordinate", in Chinese, it would be a humble way of a subordinate speaking to their superior/master (me).
