Chapter 98.1 - Used up her life

Lou Qingwu stepped down from the carriage as another horse carriage stopped nearby.

She originally didn’t care but when she saw the man step out of the carriage, her brows slowly furrowed.

Ruan family’s head?

Why would he be here?

The person who had just come was Ruan family’s current head, Ruan Xiuren.

Ruan Zhen forced him, time and time again, until this family head finally was angered and rejected Ruan Zhen’s attempts to see him.

But now this Ruan family head suddenly appeared at the Lou residence, was he here to find Ruan Zhen?

Ruan family’s head saw Lou Qingwu from the moment that he stepped out and when his eyes moved past her face, his brows also furrowed quickly before smoothing out.

His cold face brought a few hints of gentleness, “Niece Qingwu, what a coincidence.”

Lou Qingwu bent at her knees, “Qingwu sees the Ruan family’s head, is the Ruan family head here to see my father?”

Ruan family’s head froze, not knowing what he was thinking, his expression grew worse, “No, this Ruan is here to see the second madam.”

“That way, ah, then could the Ruan family head please come in.”

“Alright.”

Lou Qingwu went straight to her Leaning Wind Pavilion as the Ruan family head went straight to see Lou Qufeng first.

Even though the Ruan family head and Ruan Zhen were siblings, she’d already married into the Lou family after all, so he couldn’t see her one on one.

What made Lou Qingwu surprised was that this time, Ruan Zhen flipped the tables and rejected seeing the Ruan family head.

This reversal of roles made Lou Qingwu extremely curious.

But these few days, he’d heard that someone fell sick at the Ruan residence.

A lot of doctors were called in to visit, but they didn’t say who was sick.

“Master, this Ruan family’s really mysterious. I investigated for so long but I couldn’t find out anything. Ruan Xiuren’s pavilion is separated and normally, it’s pretty hard to get in. However, those doctors were all asked to go there straight away but it definitely isn’t Ruan Xiuren who’s sick. When I saw him that day, he looked lively and healthy. So exactly who fell sick?”

Lou Qingwu’s finger suddenly curved, lightly knocking the table.

Her eyes became deep, “Are there any strange happenings in the Ruan residence? And not just within these few days.”

“That, ah ….” Thousand Face lifted up his head and thought slowly.

He suddenly thought of something, his eyes sparkling as he looked at Lou Qingwu, his voice gossipy, “Does news of the Ruan family’s very doted on ninth madam count?”

“Ninth madam?”

“Right, so the Ruan family has this ninth madam. If you said she was doted on, Ruan Xiuren only hoisted her into the residence on a small palanquin. But if you said that he didn’t dote on her, from after this ninth madam came in, the other eight madams became display pieces. This ninth madam went straight into Ruan Xiuren’s main residence and normally, people wouldn't’ even be able to see her face. Apart from the ninth madam’s personal maidservants and a few others, a lot of people haven’t seen her face in years. Don’t you think that’s strange, master?”

Lou Qingwu’s pupils shrunk, “Which family’s miss is this ninth madam?”

Getting to this point, Thousand Face’s excitement levels were peaking.

“This part’s the strangest part. Nearly no one knows where this ninth madam came from, no one knows her identity, it’s like she just appeared out of thin air. Originally, a few years ago, the other eight wives were jealous and wanted to pick fights with her, but Ruan Xiuren protected her too well. He even punished them harshly, to the point where no one dares to even mention the ninth madam.”

Lou Qingwu’s eyes grew deeper, to protect her that well, then this ninth madam’s identity must be peculiar.

TL note:

Concubines are hoisted in from palanquins and generally enter through the side/back door because they’re not the ‘main’ or proper wife. They just get hoisted to the wedding room and that’s it.

Actual wives get hoisted in with eight palanquins accompanying her and through the main entrance, she also gets to bow at the altar with her newlywed husband which concubines don’t get the right to do.
