Even though the gossip from the street stalls weren’t something she cared about, they were something that Ruan Xiuren paid mind to.

It really was only two boxes.

His face then darkened, secretly pulling Ruan Zhen aside.

“Madam, why is there only a little bit of dowry? Where’s the ten miles of festiviites that the Ruan family head promised?”

“Something happened to the golden stores, big brother said he’d make it up to us at a later date.” Ruan Zhen lowered her eyes, using her handkerchief to hide the bitterness in her eyes.

Lian’er was getting married and Lou Qufeng could only tear himself away from the fourth madam an hour before the actual mariage?

How could she not hate him? How could she not begrudge him?

“Really?” Lou Qufeng didn’t believe her.

The Ruan family was so big, why did he have to compensate her afterwards?

“But isn’t it too stingy just to have two boxes?”

“If laoye thinks it’s too stingy, why don’t you take out some money to add to Lian’er’s dowry?” Ruan Zhen looked up, her eyes filled with tears as she looked at Lou Qufeng.

“That … money’s been pretty tight for me too. Madam, you know, these few days, because of Lian’er, I had to give the emperor 100,000 gol taels. The residence doesn’t even have money left over.” Once Lou Qufeng heard that she wanted him to take money out, he quickly scrambled to find an excuse.

Thinking about that night’s embarrassing events, Li Jingsheng’s cold eyes nearly pierced through Lou Lianxin’s red wedding veil.

The veil swayed a bit as Lou Lianxin’s eyes fell on Li Jingsheng, just catching that moment.

In an instant, it was like she’d been frozen all over.
